Enneagram and Astrology: Two Pathways to Boundlessness

How Are Enneagram and Astrology Related to Boundlessness?

Boundlessness is another name for the Infinite, the Divine, Spaciousness, Vastness, Awareness, or Consciousness. Enneagram and astrology offer complementary pathways that lead us from the experience of a separate personal identity toward the lived knowing that our True Nature is Boundless—and that this Boundless Nature is the same in everyone and everything.

Astrology reveals the themes and patterns represented by the planets, signs, and houses at the moment of our birth. It also points toward how these patterns can evolve—from sources of suffering and unconsciousness into acceptance, transformation, and freedom. The natal chart can be seen as a map of the patterns we were born to encounter, understand, and resolve in this life.

Astrology

Pluto in the natal chart can point to a wound we were born to resolve. It speaks to an old trauma or deep psychological imprint. Sometimes we know what the trauma was, particularly if it occurred during this lifetime. At other times, we may come into this life already carrying the imprint of the trauma, without knowing its origin. What we know are the emotions, sensations, and patterns associated with it.

Pluto also represents transformation, which often involves bringing our attention to the dark or hidden aspects of our psyche. Pluto speaks of the underworld and of the shadow. It directs us to delve deeply within ourselves, excavating what has been hidden with courage and acceptance.

This is the transformative process—and built into the chart is also a pathway through it.

The same principle can be seen in the South and North Nodes. The South Node describes a quality, tendency, or way of being that we come into this life already knowing. Yet there is often something unresolved within this familiar pattern that we are here to work through. The North Node points toward the direction of growth and evolution available to us in this lifetime, and toward the qualities we are invited to cultivate.

In this way, the natal chart not only reveals the patterns that may contribute to our suffering; it also contains clues about how those patterns can become doorways to greater freedom.

The Enneagram

On the surface, the Enneagram can appear to be a personality inventory or typology. It shows us whether we are primarily oriented through the head, heart, or body, and it describes the emotions, behaviors, and motivations associated with each type.

But when we study the Enneagram with a knowledgeable teacher, we begin to recognize something much deeper. We learn to see when our type is contracted and fixated and when it is more open, relaxed, and free. We learn to recognize the pattern without judging it, to accept what is present, and to let go of our identification with it.

Through this process, the pattern becomes more porous. The sense of separation begins to soften. We move toward our Essence and begin to experience directly how different the energy of Essence is from the energy of fixation.

The Enneatype Two

Let’s look at Enneatype Two as an example.

The energy of Two is heart-centered and outward-moving, energetically oriented toward others. In its fixated state, the Two experiences itself as separate and looks outward for connection, love, and validation. A person with this type may want to please others and may become highly attuned to the needs and feelings of those around them. They may try to read what others need and then fulfill those needs, while believing—consciously or unconsciously—that they themselves do not have needs of their own. Their attention becomes continually focused on watching, monitoring, and responding to others.

The first step in evolving beyond the fixation of Two is the total acceptance of all aspects of the pattern of Twoness. One of the most difficult aspects of this pattern can be the shame that lies underneath it. Shame can become a form of self-rejection or even self-hatred, causing us to turn away from ourselves rather than explore more deeply what is actually happening within us.

With understanding and compassion, this can begin to change.

Through the process of acceptance, the pattern of Two gradually relaxes. As the fixation loosens, people with this pattern may begin to experience the natural warmth of the heart more directly. Their capacity for genuine empathy and compassion grows. They begin to move from the need to give in order to receive love toward a direct experience of love and compassion as their own essential nature.

This brings them into a direct experience of the Essence of Two: compassion itself.

As they open to the essential energy of compassion, they may begin to open even more fully into the recognition that compassion is not merely something they possess or express. It is an expression of something much vaster—the Boundless, the Infinite, the Divine.

In this way, the Enneagram becomes more than a system for understanding personality. It becomes a pathway through the personality, revealing the places where we are contracted and identified, and guiding us toward the Essence that lies beyond those patterns.

Enneagram and astrology can serve a similar purpose. Each reveals something about the structure of our separate identity while also pointing beyond that identity. Together, they help us understand the patterns that shape our experience, recognize how those patterns create suffering, and discover the possibility of meeting them with awareness, compassion, and acceptance.

The deeper invitation of both paths is not to become a better or more perfected personality. It is to see through the personality—to recognize the patterns without being bound by them—and to awaken to the Boundless Nature that has never been separate from us.
